PTFA - Parents, Teachers and Friends Association
Funds raised are spent by the Head Teachers on equipment, services and experiences that the Academies’ budgets would not normally be able to provide.
Upcoming PTFA Events
How can you help?
We know that you may not want or be able to attend our termly committee meetings but you can help in many other ways. However if you would like to come along it would be great to see you – why not bring a friend? Check our Facebook page for details of future meetings, or click on the Facebook link on the top right of the website.
In the run up to our 3 main events we meet informally to discuss, plan and allot tasks. No-one is expected to take on a task single-handedly; we often work in pairs or mini teams and work to our individual strengths. Much of this preparation is done via emails.
The PTFA - who we are and what we do
The PTFA is a registered charity no 1036794 – it comprises a group of people who volunteer their time and support to organise fundraising events for both Southwater Junior and Infant Academies. As a parent/guardian you are automatically a member. Representatives of the wider Southwater community are also welcome.
The PTFA is a longstanding body which plays an active role in community life, organising two main events held in Southwater every year – the Fireworks Extravaganza and the Summer Fete. These events are held in collaboration with Castlewood School, and we work together before and during these events. We also organise a festive fair at Christmas time.
The Academies PTFA intend to introduce a revised and more up to date Constitution at their AGM in September 2015. The current Constitution is not fit for purpose and was agreed by a committee who are no longer in post.
The constitution is the document which details the rules and regulations by which our association should be run. All registered charities must have a constitution and provide a copy of this to the Charity Commission.
The charity 'PTA-UK' offers its members a model constitution which embodies best practice for PTAs and similar bodies. As members of PTA-UK, the Southwater Academies PTFA intend to bring our constitution in line with this model.

Why do we do it ?
Ask any of the PTFA members what their motivation is and they’ll all say they want to raise money for both Academies in order to improve their children’s educational provision. Here’s what some PTFA members have to say about their experiences:
“Working full time it’s not always easy to support events during the day, such as helping with reading groups or on school trips. Being part of the PTFA is a great opportunity to get involved” – Claire, Yr 4 parent.
“I went along to meet other parents and see how I could be of use. I’m now an expert at putting up gazebos and I’ve made some great friends too! My sons love that I’m involved in their academies” – Nicki, EYFS & Yr 3 parent.
