Computing
At The Southwater Junior Academy, we have a passion for efficient and innovative use of technology, and design our curriculum to keep up with the fast pace of change in IT. We acknowledge the huge part that technology plays in modern life and that our children will become even more immersed by technology as they grow up. Furthermore, we recognise that every pupil’s access to technology outside of school is varied, and so we aim to ensure that all children at Southwater develop a solid understanding of how computers work and become confident users of technology.
We seek opportunities to embed technology throughout our whole curriculum, not just in computing lessons, and pupils are encouraged to work collaboratively, supporting each other to achieve. The Computing curriculum is delivered through three concepts: computer science (coding and systems), digital literacy (online conduct and digital footprint) and information technology (the use of hardware and software). Across each year group, children explore a variety of software which support the acquisition of different skills that build over time. For example, the skill of creating algorithms and variables is explored throughout every year using the software Logo, Scratch and Kodu.
