Design and Technology
At SJA, our intent is to ensure that children are given opportunities to be innovative and creative through our Design and Technology curriculum. In a rapidly changing world, STEM subjects are becoming increasingly important, and Design and Technology at primary school gives children the tools they need to progress in this subject at secondary school. Children will learn to be creative and solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts. During their lessons, pupils will look at inspiring innovators, designers and creators, which may encourage and support a future career choice in areas such as engineering and designing.
The Design and Technology that is taught in each year group is usually reflective of the topic. All DT is delivered through a project and follows the ‘design, make and evaluate’ process. Projects are created for a clear audience and a purpose that is relevant, or can be applied to, everyday life. Woven throughout the ‘design, make and evaluate’ process, children learn key skills in cooking, textiles and technology. Pupils are supported and encouraged to be keenly critical when evaluating to ensure the best quality outcomes and improvements. This structured critique can foster innovation, and simultaneously prove to be positive boost for children when a product is improved.
During each project, there are opportunities for the children work collaboratively, which supports and enables all pupils to improve and experience success. This may be through drawing and making a prototype, such as before moving toys in Year 5, or through collaborative product research, for example, researching current pop-up books in Year 3.
