Congratulations to the table tennis team who have qualified for the national finals in Leicestershire.
After coming second in the zone finals in Tower Hamlets in January, the team travelled to Bristol to
play in the regional finals against schools from Dorset, Buckinghamshire and London. Over six
gruelling hours of play, SJA won their three matches 8-0, 7-1 and 6-2 to qualify for the national U11
finals. The boy’s sportsmanship, skill, resilience and team work shone through time and time again.
In a number of matches SJA started slowly and were behind on points but read the opposite players
game, dug in and came out as winners. On Saturday 9th May they will play against the three other
leading schools in England, for a chance to be crowned national champions. Not bad for a village
school in West Sussex!
On Sunday 31st January Southwater Junior Academy girls and boys table tennis teams travelled to Tower Hamlets for the South East Counties Table Tennis Championship.
Playing on tables that were used in the 2012 Olympics, the teams took on representatives from counties including East Sussex, Hampshire, Hertfordshire and Essex.
The Southwater Junior Academy girls team were the first West Sussex U11 Girls Champions to compete in the South East Championships and against some tough opposition they played some outstanding table tennis finishing a very respectable fourth.
The boys team were at the Championships representing the Academy for the third year running, and played matches against teams from across seven counties. After a tough first few hours the team topped their league, and drew the East Sussex Champions in the semi’s, beating them convincingly 8-0.
In the finals the result came down to the last game of the last match, with Southwater Junior Academy just missing out on first place. As runner’s up the Southwater Junior Academy Boy’s team now travel to Bristol to compete for a place in the National Finals.
On Friday 9th January, Zach, Oliver, Ben & Sheel completed the season winning all 9 matches, only losing 5 points out of a maximum 72.
