Sport at Southwater Junior Academy
Sport and high quality PE are a central pillar in our educational provision. At it's core is a well-planned PE curriculum based on a ‘skills led’ format. This provision, for all pupils of all abilities, ensures that pupils are introduced to a range of activities, skills and formats, find PE lessons enjoyable and are physically active for extended periods. We have introduced an system of assessment to ensure we meet the needs of all pupils, extended pupils and are able to differentiate provision.

PE Quality Mark
In July 2014 Southwater Junior Academy became the first primary or junior school in the whole of West Sussex to be awarded the AFPE Quality Mark for PE.The Association for Physical Education (afPE) is the only physical education subject association in the UK. We were awarded this fantastic achievement as recognition of the great work our pupils' and teachers' do on a daily basis, to ensure the highest level of PE, range of activities, sport, competition and extra curricular clubs that are provided at SJA. Sports Premium Payment Following the Sports Premium payment, provided by government specifically for PE, we have employed our own, full-time PE Instructor, Mr Paul Showell to work alongside our PE Co-ordinator, Mrs Laura Bamber. This has had an immense impact on provision, leading to SJA being recognised as one of the top providers of high quality PE and sport in West Sussex. At Southwater Junior Academy we have a number of children who are seen as gifted and talented in a number of sports. We feel it is important to enable these pupils to progress further in their chosen sport by providing more challenging sporting activities. This is carried out in not only day to day lessons where objectives are differentiated to meet the needs of each individual pupil, but also in holiday sports clubs for G&T pupils and at district G&T events. These sessions allow those gifted and talented pupils the opportunity to extend their sporting abilities. We also link with local clubs, complimenting their coaching and signposting children to the clubs. |
Teams
Teams represent Southwater Juniors in Cross Country, Football, Tag Rugby, Netball, Hockey, Swimming, Rounders, Cricket, Gymnastics, Athletics, Stoolball, Badminton, Tennis, Basketball, Dance and Table Tennis, and all competitions are open to both boys and girls. Mr Showell leads the majority of PE lessons, teaching various games in a ‘skills led’ format. Along with Miss Marriott, he works with teacher to ensure high quality PE teaching throughout the school. This provision is for all pupils regardless of ability and a system of assessment is being put into place to ensure that all children are enjoying and improving in every field of sport. We offer an extensive range of sporting clubs and activities to all of our pupils and take part in all of the Horsham and District Primary Schools' sporting events and competitions. Our Academy places a high value on sportmanship and competition.
